The #GivingTuesday philanthropic day showed a big increase in participation, both of organizations involved with this day and donors that led to greatly improved results in year two of the fledgling “holiday”. More than 10,000 nonprofit organizations came together to urge their supporters to give time or money on December 3 up from 2,500 organizations in 2012.
The increase in participants helped double online donations from $12-million to $21-million, according to data from Blackbaud and Network for Good, two organizations that help nonprofits handle online gifts. PayPal says donations given through its site doubled from last year but didn’t release figures.
The success of #GivingTuesday is the creation of a rallying point around which organizations engaged their constituencies to spread the word and recruit donors, advocates and volunteers. Successful #GivingTuesday campaigns show how organizations can harness the tools at their disposal to connect with donors and move them to action.
